The Matrix was one of my early feature projects at Animal Logic, where I worked as a Visual Effects Artist across lighting and compositing. It was an extraordinary introduction to the possibilities of digital filmmaking, and it gave me a foundation in integrating CG imagery with live-action photography.

Animal Logic’s work included the Matrix code, the code hallway, screen inserts, the trace programme, and the exploding Agent effect. These elements became some of the film’s most recognisable visual signatures, and it was incredibly exciting to see design, programming, lighting, and compositing combine into images that felt completely new.

The project was formative for me because it combined design, programming, lighting, compositing, and production problem solving in such a direct way. It showed me how a focused group of digital effects could establish an entire visual language for a film - and change the way audiences imagined computer-generated worlds.
