At Animal Logic, I was a Computer Graphics Supervisor on The Great Gatsby, working alongside Greg Jowle. It was a fantastic project to be part of: Baz Luhrmann’s film gave us the chance to build a huge, glamorous digital world and push it right up against the live-action photography.
Animal Logic created almost 600 visual-effects shots as the lead vendor. I worked with the team on the digital environments that brought 1920s New York and the estates of Long Island to life, drawing on historical references, concept art, and reference photography gathered in New York.
What I loved about the project was how closely the CG had to serve the production design and cinematography. We weren’t building a separate digital city; we were extending the film’s richly designed world so that camera movement, stereo photography, crowds, architecture, and atmosphere all felt like one dazzling visual idea.
