The project

Every neighbourhood is its own world.

Tiny Planets: Sydney began as a project to create a professional-quality photo book and a collection of archival fine-art prints from computational panoramas of Sydney. I wanted to show familiar neighbourhoods from a completely different perspective: each one becomes a self-contained little planet, with its roads, buildings, parks and coastline wrapped into a single image.

We all live in our own worlds. Our neighbourhoods and communities give us a sense of connection and identity that helps us make sense of the complexity of modern life. Tiny Planets is a showcase of those neighbourhoods and the beauty and meaning they hold.

My background in photography and computer graphics shaped the process. Each image begins with a carefully planned shoot and hundreds of individual photographs captured from the air, followed by extensive editing, stitching and refinement. The final artwork has the detail of a map, the distortion of a miniature planet and the colour and energy of a place seen from above.

The project was originally brought to life through Kickstarter, where 51 backers pledged A$10,086 toward making the book and prints. The campaign also introduced Tiny Planets 360, an immersive extension of the project designed for Apple Vision Pro.
