Cinema’s Lasting Impact on Film Memory

The lasting benefit of the theatrical experience: I heard an interesting observation from Joseph Kosinski, director of F1, that really stuck with me, especially in the context of streamers increasingly avoiding theatrical releases.

His point was that the cinema experience doesn’t just make a film better in the moment compared to watching it on a small screen. It actually changes the way the film is encoded in your long-term memory.

If your first experience of a film is in the cinema, the memory of that experience becomes part of the film itself. So every rewatch at home is enhanced, because you’re effectively revisiting the emotional imprint of that first big-screen viewing. If your first exposure is just on a TV or laptop at home, it doesn’t embed the same way and you don’t get that same lasting uplift on rewatch.

I think a lot of the assumption that home viewing is just as good as the cinema forgets how important that long-term memory effect is.
